OC Rescue Mission promotes entrepreneurship for kids with digital Children’s Business Fair

Orange County Rescue Mission is hosting its OC Children’s Business Fair, an annual event created to promote entrepreneurship and innovation among kids at the Rescue Mission. The event tasks kids with creating a small business and promoting the businesses they have created to the local community digitally.

“This is an extremely important event that aids in building core skills that these kids will carry on into their adult lives,” explains Jim Palmer, President of Orange County Rescue Mission. “The business fair inspires kids to be creative and think out of the box, as well as establishes a sense of responsibility of running a business.”

This year’s event will be hosted virtually where members of the community are invited to support these young entrepreneurs by visiting the online business fair. Four children living at Village of Hope will promote their products and give online community viewers the opportunity to sponsor one or more of the kids with a donation. All of the net proceeds from these donations to Orange County Rescue Mission will go directly to the kids, in the form of Target gift cards. The digital fair will launch on Thursday, July 30 and closes on Sunday, August 2nd at midnight.

“Typically, the event is hosted at Village of Hope and tends to draw crowds of 300 plus people, featuring up to 50 booths staffed by children from the Rescue Mission and the surrounding communities. Because of the pandemic, we had to move the business fair online, which will now operate more like an e-commerce store for the kids to showcase the digital businesses they worked so hard to create.”

Leading up to the business fair, the kids at the Rescue Mission participated in the Kids on a Mission program, which is a four-day comprehensive program consisting of virtual classes and one-on-one mentorship.

“The kids are paired will local advisors who work closely with the children on developing business and entrepreneurial skills,” explains Palmer. “The busines fair is a place where they can take what they learned and put it into action by determining what their business is, and how they will present it to the community. It is truly a remarkable program and something we are excited to continue this year even as a virtual event.”
