A Lakewood urgent care facility is one of the few in our region to now offer the FDA-approved COVID-19 rapid test that provides results while you wait, usually within 15 minutes.
Tests are done on a walk-in basis; no appointments. The test is not free, but most PPO insurance plans cover a major portion of the cost. A copay of $3 to $100 may be required, but for people who need a test and results rapidly, the Lakewood facility can be very helpful. See Urgent Care Pros contact information here. Urgent Care Pros reports that walk-in lines average from 15 to 60 minutes, with the shortest lines in the afternoons.
In addition, this week the L.A. County Department of Public Health announced a major expansion of its free testing capability, growing from 40,000 to 55,000 tests per week. The county test sites all require an appointment, but an L.A. County press release says that tests within a few days are available. There is then a wait of several days for results.
The City of Long Beach runs several sites with free tests, and Lakewood residents are accepted there. The Long Beach website also includes links to CVS and Rite-Aid, which perform tests at most of their facilities by appointment.
Public health authorities encourage people who believe they need a test to FIRST contact their primary health care provider to see if they in fact need a test AND to see if a test is available through their provider.
