As previously reported, during the regular meeting of the Los Alamitos City Council on August 17, 2020, the Council voted to appoint Jordan Nefulda the join the Council effective November 3. In an unexpected move, the Council will now be holding a special meeting at 5 p.m. on August 24 to repeal the appointment.
Mr. Nefulda, who currently serves as a commissioner on the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Commission, was the sole candidate to run for the Los Alamitos City Council in District 3. Since he lacked an opponent, the Council opted to appoint him rather than wait for the November election.
However, according to the Special Council Meeting agenda, “[i]n working with the Orange County Registrar of Voters office, is was determined that since the City has a qualified measure on the ballot for November 3, 2020, the District 3 seat cannot be filled by appointment and must be placed on the ballot.”
The election for District 3 will go forward in November in addition to Districts 1 and 2, who have two candidates apiece running.
