Barricaded suspect peacefully taken into custody after several hours of negociations

A barricaded domestic violence suspect was peacefully taken into custody after several hours of negotiations with Seal Beach Police officers.

On Saturday, September 26, 2020 at about 12:22 pm, the Seal Beach Police Department responded to a call of domestic violence at a residence located in the 100-block of 8th Street. After an altercation with her husband in which he threatened his wife with a knife, the victim was able to run out of the residence and summon help.

When Seal Beach Police officers arrived, they attempted to make contact with the suspect but he refused to comply and exit his residence. Additional resources were called to the scene including a mobile command post and officers trained in crisis negotiations.

Police negotiators were able to establish communication with the suspect via telephone. After several hours of negotiations with the suspect, he ultimately exited the residence on his own volition. He was safely taken into custody without further incident. The suspect was identified as Justin Rodrigues, age 40, of Seal Beach. He was later booked at the Orange County Jail on charges of felony domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon.

“Our negotiators did a fantastic job during this incident” said Seal Beach Chief of Police Philip L. Gonshak. “Their ability to communicate with the suspect ultimately led to a peaceful end to what might have turned into an otherwise violent confrontation.”

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Detective Chris Fisher at (562) 799-4100 ext. 1110 or [email protected].
