USC Trojans break the hearts of Bruin fans everywhere

Yesterday’s game was a prime example of why I annually swear off (and swear at) Trojan football.

With less than a minute left in the game, it looked like Chip Kelly would get his first winning season as head coach at UCLA. A 43-yard field goal by Nicholas Barr-Mira put the Bruins ahead by two, and the Trojans had no timeouts left.

Then the Cardiac Kids went berzerk for 36 seconds.

Trojan Gary Bryant ran the kickoff back for 56 yards, close to field goal range — but the Trojans wouldn’t settle for a field goal. Quarterback Kedon Slovis dropped a pass into the waiting arms of receiver Tyler Vaughns for first-and-goal. On the very next play, Amon-Ra St. Browne leaped up in the end zone and caught another pass from Slovis.

UCLA could not overcome those 36 seconds with the 16 seconds that were left on the clock.

Next year, Coach Kelly. Next year.
