Mike’s Quarantine Chronicles: Letting the Peace of God Reign

Luke 2:10-14 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

This must have been a frightening event for these shepherds. An ANGEL speaking to them! I am not sure what angels look like, but their appearance seemed to strike fear. For the first words out of their mouths were ‘Fear not,’ Luke 1:11-20, 26-38. If one angel were not enough, also joining in was a multitude, a whole host of heavenly beings chiming in, praising God, and declaring peace to humanity. Wow, what a scene! I’m not sure those shepherds were feeling much ‘peace on earth’ at that moment. Yet they were curious enough to go check what the angels proclaimed. They found Jesus, the Prince of Peace Isaiah 9:6, the promised One who would bring order to life.

This encounter changed these shepherds.

Luke 2:20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

This life-change happened the with the wisemen Matthew 2:1-10 that sought this extraordinary Child King the Scriptures had prophesied (here is a great list of the Old Testament prophesies of Jesus). Seeing Jesus changed these prestigious and powerful men. They were king-makers, men full of wisdom and knowledge. The smartest and brightest of their time. People bowed to them, yet as they saw and understood even a glimpse of who Jesus is, they fell down in honor and worshiped Him.

Matthew 2:11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Peace is a huge value to me. As a kid from a very hectic, horrible, stressful childhood I desired times of peace. I wanted a family that was not full of arguing, fighting, hurtful words, and the horrors of alcohol abuse. There was even a point I felt such despair and emptiness, I wanted out of life. I longed for peace. I hoped for peace. And by the grace and mercy of God, I found Jesus and His peace fills my life. It was and still is the willful choice to let Jesus reign in my life. To continue to replace fear with the truth of the goodness of Jesus’ leadership of my life.

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

Sheep follow because they have surrendered to the guidance of their leader. And I need to do the same. I do trust in The Lord’s leadership in both the good and tough circumstances of life. Sure, it’s a big disappointment we can’t be with family or our church family these next few of days of Christmas, and I continue to process my feelings, but as I let the peace of Jesus reign, my soul is settled.

I hope it can be the same for you too as you walk though life. Yes, there are a lot of things to fear, COVID being one, and difficulties to face. But we can experience peace as we embrace Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Pray this with me:

Lord, You are the One who brings peace, peace with God in salvation, and the peace of God in the fears of life. I do desire to seek Your presence like the shepherds and the wisemen. I do worship You and hold You high as the most powerful influence of my life. Please help me to keep returning to Your peace each day. In Your name, Jesus’ name, Amen.
