I-405 Improvement Project construction alert: Week of December 28

Happy New Year!

There will be no nighttime closures scheduled Thursday, December 31 to Monday, January 4. Additionally, there will be no construction activities Friday, January 1. Construction activities will resume Monday, January 4.

COMING SOON! Westminster Boulevard Traffic Shift

Crews will soon shift traffic to the new half of the Westminster bridge over I-405 and begin working on the second half. The traffic shift will happen in phases and is set for early-to-mid January. It will require bridge and ramp closures.

Demolition of the second half of the bridge will occur over two weekends under full freeway closures and is set for late January and early February.

The 405 Community Outreach Team will provide detailed schedule, closure and detour information in future alerts.

COMING SOON! Fairview Road Traffic Shift

Crews also will soon shift traffic to the new half of the Fairview bridge over I-405 and begin working on the second half of that bridge. The traffic shift is set for early-to-mid February and will require bridge and ramp closures.

REMINDER! Heil Avenue Extended Closure

Crews began construction activities for the Heil pedestrian bridge over I-405. Activities include excavation, shoring, and pile driving to continue forming the foundation of the bridge.

Following this work, crews will begin forming the footings and columns, as well as construct the falsework to form the spans over the freeway.

This work will require an extended closure of Heil between Ross Lane and Landau Lane.

The closure began on Wednesday, Dec. 30, and is expected to continue for approximately seven months.

Residential access will be maintained at all times.

Work will be suspended Thursday, Dec. 31, and Friday, Jan. 1.

UPDATE! Southbound (SB) I-405 On-Ramp from Westminster Boulevard to Close for Approximately One Month

Crews will close the SB I-405 on-ramp from Westminster Boulevard for approximately one month to accommodate the freeway widening.

Activities include demolition, excavation, grading, drainage and electrical system installation, concrete pours and paving.

The ramp is set to close as early as 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5.

NEW! Westminster Boulevard Sidewalk Closure

Crews will close the sidewalk along eastbound Westminster Boulevard, between Springdale Street and Willow Lane.

The closure is needed to accommodate the southbound I-405 Westminster on-ramp extended closure as well as the bridge’s upcoming traffic shift.

A detour will be in place for pedestrians and bicyclists to navigate around the closure.

The sidewalk is set to close as early as 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.

COMING SOON! Northbound (NB) I-405 On-Ramp from South Coast Drive/Hyland Avenue to Close for Approximately Two Months

Crews will close the NB I-405 on-ramp from South Coast Dr./ Hyland Ave. for approximately two months to accommodate the freeway widening.

Activities include demolition, excavation, grading, drainage and electrical system installation, concrete pours and paving.

The ramp is set to close as early as 10 p.m., Monday, Jan. 11.

NEW! Daytime Westbound (WB) Euclid/Ellis Street Lane Closure

Crews will close one lane on WB Euclid/Ellis between the southbound freeway ramps and Pacific Street to perform backfill work. The daytime closure is set to begin as early as 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31, and again on Monday, Jan. 4, and Tuesday, Jan. 5.

REMINDER! Sugar Drive to Close Daily for Utility Work

A section of Sugar Drive between Cascade Lane and Rushmoor Lane is being closed daily so crews can perform utility work.

Daily closures are set to continue 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., for approximately one month.

Work will be suspended Thursday, Dec. 31, and Friday, Jan. 1.

REMINDER! Nightly Southbound (SB) I-405 Freeway Closures for Bridge Work

Nightly SB I-405 closures are scheduled to continue for Brookhurst Street bridge construction. Activities include equipment mobilization, pile installation, shoring installation, falsework installation and grading, and column demolition for the old half of the Brookhurst bridge.

SB I-405 will be closed between Magnolia and Brookhurst.

The nightly closures are set to continue 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights for approximately three weeks, as needed.

REMINDER! Nightly Consecutive Ramp Closures Scheduled for Approximately Six Months

Nightly closures of the following ramps will be scheduled as needed for six monthsto support bridge construction activities at Magnolia and Brookhurst:

  • Southbound (SB) I-405 Loop On-Ramp from Magnolia
  • SB I-405 On-Ramp from Warner Avenue
  • SB I-405 Loop On-Ramp from Brookhurst

Closure hours are:

  • 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. weeknights
  • 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekends

REMINDER! Southbound (SB) I-405 Off-Ramp to Euclid Street Closed for Approximately One Month

Crews closed the SB I-405 off-ramp to Euclid to accommodate the freeway widening. The ramp is set to reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Activities include demolition, excavation, grading, drainage and electrical system installation, concrete pours and paving.

REMINDER! Southbound (SB) I-405 Off-Ramp to Bolsa Chica Road Closed for Approximately One Year

Crews closed the SB I-405 off-ramp to Bolsa Chica Road on Dec. 3, 2020 for approximately one year to advance construction on the Bolsa Chica bridge.

Activities include demolition, excavation, grading, drainage and electrical system installation, concrete pours and asphalt paving.

Construction Activities

Fairview Road

UPDATE! Crews are scheduled to pour concrete for the retaining wall along northbound (NB) Fairview Road, south of the on-ramp to SB I-405 and SB SR-73. This work will also require NB Fairview lane reductions.

  • Concrete activities and lane reductions are set for as early as 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday, Jan. 4, and again on Jan. 15.

NEW! Crews are scheduled to install temporary signals at Fairview. This work will require NB Fairview lane reductions between freeway ramps.

  • Lane reductions are set for as early as 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 30, and Wednesday, Jan. 6, to Friday, Jan. 8.

Moon Park

UPDATE! Crews are scheduled to pour concrete for the retaining wall along southbound (SB) I-405, between the Santa Ana River and Harbor Boulevard. Additional activities include backfill, grading, and rebar for approximately two months.

  • Concrete activities are set to continue 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5., Monday, Jan. 11, Saturday, Jan. 16, and Thursday, Jan. 21.
  • Block wall installation is anticipated to begin in early 2021. Work hours are scheduled for 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Crews may mobilize equipment as early as 6 a.m. and some activity may occur at night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as needed.

Activities will be suspended New Year’s Day.

Talbert Avenue

NEW! Crews will install a waterline in the Talbert bridge over I-405 to accommodate the freeway widening.

The 405 Community Outreach Team will continue to provide detailed detour and schedule information in future alerts.

Brookhurst Street

REMINDER! Crews will continue installing piles for the foundation of the Brookhurst bridge over I-405, adjacent to Brookhurst. Approximately 130 piles will be used.

  • Ongoing 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, for approximately two months.

Crews may mobilize equipment as early as 6 a.m. and some activities may occur at night.

Activities will be suspended New Year’s Day.

UPDATE! Crews will continue shoring installation to support construction activities for the Brookhurst bridge over I-405. This work requires nightly lane reductions of Brookhurst between Talbert Avenue and Slater Avenue.

Nightly Brookhurst lane reductions are set to continue 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, and again on Monday, Jan. 4.

Edinger Avenue

REMINDER! Crews will continue installing piles along northbound and southbound I-405 for the foundation of the new Edinger Avenue bridge. Approximately 150 piles will be used.

  • Ongoing 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays for approximately one month.

Crews may mobilize equipment as early as 6 a.m. and some activities may occur at night.

Activities will be suspended New Year’s Day.

REMINDER! Crews will continue demolishing the remainder of the Edinger bridge over I-405. Upcoming activities include removing the bridge columns in the center median of the freeway.

This work will require southbound (SB) I-405 lane closures at night, as needed.

  • Demolition activities are set to begin as early as 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 6, and continue for approximately one week.

Crews may mobilize equipment as early as 6 a.m. and some activity may occur at night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as needed.

Navy Railroad Bridge

REMINDER! Crews will continue installing falsework along northbound (NB) I-405 adjacent to the railroad for approximately one month to accommodate the freeway widening.

Activities include installation of steel and wooden falsework and mobilization of equipment.

  • Ongoing 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, for approximately one month.

Crews may mobilize equipment as early as 6 a.m. and some activities may occur at night.

Activities will be suspended New Year’s Day.

Vermont Street

REMINDER! Crews will continue working on the foundation of the wall along southbound (SB) I-405, south of Bolsa Ave. The foundation consists of approximately 180 cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles. This activity includes augering large holes, and installing rebar cages and pouring concrete into the holes to form the piles.

  • Ongoing 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, for approximately two months.

Crews may mobilize equipment as early as 6 a.m. and some activities may occur at night.

Activities will be suspended Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Bolsa Chica Road

COMING SOON! Crews will begin installing piles for the foundation of the center columns for the Bolsa Chica bridge over I-405, in the center median, west of the Bolsa Chica bridge.

The 405 Community Outreach Team will provide detailed schedule information in future alerts.
