Assemblywoman Janet Nguyen (R-AD72) responds to Gov. Newsom’s 2021 budget

Today, California Governor Gavin Newsom released his $227.1 Billion Budget Proposal for 2021-22.

Governor Newsom’s budget proposal includes allocating $1.5 billion for the infrastructure and incentives to implement the state’s zero-emission vehicle goals while only proposing a $1.1 billion allocation to immediate relief for small business.

“While I appreciate Governor Newsom’s efforts in K-14 funding and providing COVID-19 relief, I do not believe our priorities as a state during a worldwide pandemic should be on helping people purchase electric cars and build charging stations,” said Assemblywoman Janet Nguyen. “Helping families, employees and businesses survive this catastrophic pandemic should take precedent over the Governor’s personal zero-emission vehicle goal. There are larger things at stake here.

“Unfortunately, the budget proposal reveals an out-of-touch administration that is failing to address California’s affordability crisis, homelessness crisis, power shutoffs, and an incompetent EDD bureaucracy. I look forward to working with my colleagues on a budget that will restore California’s economy and focus on recovery.”

The California Constitution requires the Governor to submit a budget proposal each year to the Legislature by January 10th. The Legislature has until June 15th to pass an approved budget.
