Congressman Lowenthal issues statement on second impeachment of President Trump

Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47), today, issued the following statement on the successful vote in the House to impeach President Trump:

“Today, I voted to impeach President Donald Trump for the second time. This was not an action I took lightly, but an action I was compelled to take in order to uphold my oath as a Member of Congress. President Trump is a threat to our nation and in full public view violated his duties to the Constitution, to our democracy, and to the American people.

“For months, the president and his enablers lied about the election, whipping up misplaced anger among his followers. He then encouraged his followers to come to Washington for a “wild” rally to support overthrowing the election results. At the rally, the president continued to incite his followers, further encouraging their anger. Then he pointed down Constitution Avenue and told his followers to march to the U.S. Capitol and unleash their anger on Congress. They did, and five people died.

“Make no mistake, the president set the stage, invited the audience, and lit the match that sparked the deadly insurrection at the Capitol. Just as disturbing was his lack of response while Congress Members were begging for him to help, while Capitol Police were being beaten and killed, and while his followers hunted through the Capitol seeking to do harm to Members of Congress and even his own Vice President. President Trump has abrogated the responsibilities of his office and violated his oath to the Constitution.

“Every day he remains in office is another chance for him to foment further violence. He must be removed now. The House has now done its duty to protect our nation from the president by impeaching him. Now the Senate must act quickly to convict the president and remove him from office.”

  1. Let me add a few facts to the discussion:
    1. The attack on the capital was planned days before January 6th. FBI and NYPD knew it and notified authorities in DC who appeared to do nothing to increase security.
    2. The breach occurred at least 20 minutes BEFORE Trump finished speaking.
    3. There was not one syllable of incitement in his speech. In fact his words were “”I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard,”
    4. The rally was organized by The Women for America First-not Trump. He did announce that he would speak.
    5. Yes, 5 people died. 3 of seemingly natural causes. 1 mistakenly shot by DC authorities. And 1 DC policeman killed by a rioter.
    6. Trump was wrong to state that Pence had the authority to discount electors on his own.
    7. Democrats have challenged electors many times in the past.
My opinion: These thugs were not typical Trump supporters. Are we supposed to forget about the dozens of Trump rallies over the past 5 years in which there was NO violence? And if you count the rest of the country…..hundreds. Are we to forget about the looting, burning, and rioting in many of our major cities last summer? If these were put down at the time it’s likely Jan 6th would have never happened. And if the Minneapolis police would have done their job…not of it would have happened. Leftist democrats sat silent during all of this. I personally would like to see an investigation in to voting irregularities but that was shut down by democrats. Wake up America…You’re being “gaslighted”
