I hope all is well with you and your families. Here is the latest update.
Summer Dead Period waived for 2021
CIF Southern Section Bylaw 1223.3 states, “A summer dead period must be declared by the school district and/or principal for all sports. The dates of the dead period must be forwarded to the Southern Section Commissioner. The dead period must be the same for all sports levels and must be two (2) consecutive weeks, fourteen (14) days between the end of school in the spring and the first day of school in the fall. No class could be offered which could circumvent the rule. There are no exceptions to the dead period. During the dead period, NO weightlifting would be permitted. No running or other type of conditioning would be allowed. No coordinated workouts by ANY staff or volunteer member associated with the school are allowed.”
As I mentioned in an earlier update, we have spent the last couple of weeks examining the summer dead period and whether this might be the summer we would waive it, due to the uncertainty of this school year and the late ending dates of our Spring Sports. Through the efforts of our Area Representatives on our Executive Committee, Superintendents Advisory Committee, Private School Leadership Advisory Committee, Athletics Administrators Advisory Committee, and local county athletic director’s associations, we were able to get significant input/feedback on this issue. The responses we received revealed a very strong consensus, approximately 75% of those who responded, who expressed their desire that we waive the summer dead period for 2021. Therefore, per CIF Southern Section Bylaw 1112, Section Commissioner Authority to Interpret, CIF Southern Section Bylaw 1223.3, Summer Dead Period, is waived for the summer of 2021. This is a waiver for the upcoming summer only and CIF Southern Section Bylaw 1223.3 will be fully reinstated for the summer of 2022.
Even though this bylaw has been waived for the upcoming summer, we strongly encourage our Principals, Athletic Directors, and coaches to still allow for student-athletes and their families to have some time together. In this period where maximum flexibility for all involved has been paramount, I hope our member schools will ensure that there will be flexibility within their summer programs for this to occur.
