California leaders must expand comprehensive Medi-Cal coverage to undocumented seniors

California is making strides to overcome COVID-19 but state leaders can’t stop there. Instead, they must also invest in Californians and communities that have been harmed by exclusionary policies, historically underserved, and most impacted by the pandemic.

This must include California’s undocumented seniors.

A new Budget Center report shows undocumented seniors in California have a higher risk of severe illness and death due to COVID-19 because of their age. At the same time, they are excluded from comprehensive health coverage through Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, due to their immigration status.

By expanding comprehensive Medi-Cal coverage to all undocumented Californians and urgently to seniors, state policymakers have an opportunity to end an exclusionary policy, advance health equity for all Californians, and promote the health and well-being of communities across the state.
