During their April meeting, West Orange County Republican Women Federated surprised long-time member Theresa Sherrin with the club’s 2021 woman of distinction award. The “Mindy Yatsui Woman of Distinction Award,” named after a beloved member who always volunteered and kept her beautiful smile even through difficult battles against cancer, is given only when a member deserves its special recognition.
Theresa Sherrin and her husband Don have lived in Los Alamitos since 1964. Making a difference in the lives of many women as the founder and Patron Saint of Precious Life Shelter, Sherrin has often said, “I was there to help someone rise from the depths of despair, and I had a willing husband who was with me every step of the way. They survived and so did we. What could be better?”
Sherrin, active in conservative Republican politics, was introduced by VP Ways and Means Theresa Murphy. Precious Life Shelter Executive Director Theresa Murphy knows intimately Sherrin’s dedication to helping pregnant women and new moms in their struggles to become successful members of society. Murphy told the nearly 100 women and men that “as executive director I have worked closely with Theresa at Precious Life Shelter for more than 25 years. Her desire to help has always been of paramount importance to her. She always has taken planning, developing and implementing programs very seriously and is way more than talk. Theresa wants action! She is not afraid to tell or direct others to do something but is always ready to step in and do whatever it takes to make a difference. At Precious Life we call her “TT” – Theresa Trouble because we know she will make trouble if people are going to talk and not act.”
With Sherrin’s daughter-in-law Tammy Sherrin sharing tears of joy, Murphy continued. “The goal of “Saving babies, one mother at a time” has not gone unnoticed as she and her husband Don housed over 45 pregnant women in their home before ever getting all the plans done to open Precious Life Shelter in 1989. Knowing more than 3,300 women have had the opportunity to have a safe place to birth their child and get back into the workplace and ‘life’ has been a Godsend.”
President Nancy Hathcock, when presenting the certificate, said she had the great honor on behalf of the West Orange County Republican Women Federated board of directors to recognize Theresa Sherrin as the club’s 2021 Mindy Yatsui Woman of Distinction.
