Weekly message from Neighborhood Church: Let’s brighten someone’s day

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,

I have this neighbor who just makes me smile. Yes, he brightens my day. He is an older gentleman and about every two weeks or so he brings me a bottle of his favorite BBQ sauce. I’m not sure how it all started, but he brings me BBQ sauce and I BBQ/smoke something up and bring it over to him. We’ve also exchanged chocolates and cookies and few other treats. It’s fun, and honestly just makes my day. We don’t talk much, just a thank you here and there and some comments about the food. This neighbor spurs me on to bless others and interact more with my fellow neighbors.

This idea of blessing others goes back to when God challenged Abraham to be a blessing to others.

Genesis 12:2 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

The words here in Genesis 12:2 ‘to be a blessing,’ mean to take on actions that stir up or provoke or incite. They are actions that stir up kindness, that provoke laughter, that incite a smile. These are actions that influence. It’s smiling at someone and them smiling back. It’s a kind or well-timed word of affirmation that helps people see their value. It’s providing help. It’s giving gifts like a bottle of BBQ sauce.

Hebrews 13:16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

1 Peter 3:9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

Galatians 6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Romans 15:2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.

2 Thessalonians 3:13 As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good.

How could you brighten someone’s day? We all can smile and say hello. Think about what brightens your day and try that or maybe bring someone your favorite BBQ sauce! God placed us where we are, in our home, school, neighborhood, work, and community to be a blessing and spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let’s brighten someone’s day.
