John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I (Jesus) came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
We had an amazing Mother’s Day celebration at our house. All our young moms were there, four moms, four dads, eight kids! It was such a joy. The kids were running all over playing; the girl cousins were playing in each room rearranging pillows and playing ‘house.’ The boy cousins were running around the house, wrestling, throwing balls on the roof and letting them roll down, playing tag and just goofing around. Our kids, now parents themselves, were talking to their siblings and in-laws and Kristi and I were having moments with our kids, their spouses, and grandkids. It was also one of our grandkid’s birthday. So, we had a pinata, birthday cake, and fun opening presents, both birthday and mom’s day gifts. As most everyone left and I was thinking back over the huge blessing of our fun family, I thought how different life is. Yes, a GREAT and wonderful difference, but very different from when Kristi and I were first married, and it was just us. Sure, there have been some adjustments and when our family expanded exponentially, wow, it was different, and we had to get used to different.
Different is not always bad. It does take getting used to, and when it comes to the difference Jesus can make in our lives, that’s an amazingly awesome difference. As John 10:10 says, Jesus came that we might have life abundantly, to the max! It is life as it was meant to be experienced, where we thrive. When we place Jesus as the highest influence in our life, like following Him as our Leader, Boss, Coach, Mentor, Master, King, Lord…life aligns.
Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
1 Peter 5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.
John 14:15 If you love me (Jesus), you will keep my commandments.
Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
Following Jesus, living life His way, is different. We surrender to His will over ours. We seek to do what He says over just doing what we want. When His will or way does not make sense, we trust in Him and lean not on our own understanding, Proverbs 3:5-8. I love how the TV series ‘The Chosen’ depicted this need to get used to different when we follow Jesus. The scene is Jesus calling Matthew to be one of His disciples. Peter objects and says Matthew is not a good guy and does not understand Jesus’ choice. Jesus tells Peter that Peter did not get it when Jesus chose him. Peter retorts back, “This is different.” Jesus just says, “get used to different.” ‘The Chosen’ is a depiction of the life of Jesus and His disciples. It basically follows the Bible with a bit of ‘artistic license’ to fill in what could have been. I would highly recommend it and encourage followers of Jesus to both read the biblical accounts and watch the series. Here is a link to The Chosen YouTube Channel. The biblical call of Matthew is found in Matthew 9:9-19 and Luke 5:27-32. Yes, the call of a tax collector was very different, but so are a lot things Jesus taught: see Matthew 5:43-48, Luke 6:27-36. Let’s get used to the difference Jesus brings to life!!
