Nahum 1:7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him.
God is good! Yes, He is, all the time!
When you hear those words, “God is good” what is it about God that you assign the meaning that He is good? Maybe it’s as Nahum 1:7 says: that God is that shelter or unshakable foundation in times of trouble. Other Bible verses can help us further understand the goodness of God:
Psalm 25:8-9 Good and upright is the LORD; therefore, He instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble His way.
Psalms 145:9 The LORD is good to all, and His mercy is over all that he has made.
Psalm 145:5-7 On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate. They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness. They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
Psalms 34:8 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Psalm 100:4-5 Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him; bless His name! For the LORD is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.
Psalms 119:68 You (God) are good and do good; each me your statutes.
1 Chronicles 16:34 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever!
Oh, I could go on, as Scripture is packed full of proclaiming the goodness of God. Yes, God is good. We see His goodness all around us. Look at His creation; it screams out how good God is. He set systems and establishes orders that not only cause life to survive, but thrive.
Psalm 19:1-2 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
Not only is God good in His creation, but in the way we are built to have relationship: relationships with others and a relationship with Him. God designed us to be united with others where we gain a sense of belonging and connection. Those relationships sharpen us and cause us to thrive. Yes, God is good!
Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
As well and beyond, our relationship with Jesus is that factor that brings into alignment the life God created us to live (see Psalm 139:13-18, Matthew 6:33). Yes, God is good.
I also am reminded of the goodness of God, specifically Nahum 1:7, every time I get a Double-Double at In-N-Out Burger. Printed on the wrapper of that burger is the reference ‘Nahum 1:7.’ Yes, God is good!
