The Knights of Columbus Council 8599, based at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church in Cypress, joined with other councils nationwide to raise funds to purchase wheelchairs to donate to veterans as part of the Knights’ American Wheelchair Mission.

Council 8599’s goal was to raise enough money to be able to donate 20 wheelchairs to the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Long Beach.

Because the Knights purchase the wheelchairs in bulk and assemble the parts themselves, each wheelchair costs only $150. In order to be able to donate 20 wheelchairs, the goal was to raise $3,000.

The appeal was made over the weekend, June 29 and 30, at all Masses held at St. Irenaeus Church.

This week, the Council was able to announce that the appeal brought in enough money to purchase 175 wheelchairs — almost nine times the goal!

The Knights of Columbus Council 8599 extends its heartfelt thanks to all those who gave “the gift of mobility and dignity to our Veterans.”
