Favored Signofthecross won for the second time in as many starts at Los Alamitos, edging George Herman Ruth in Friday’s $48,000 feature.
Trained by Leonard Powell for Emily Burns, Christina Gindt and Mary Ledding, the 4-year-old Cross Traffic gelding and jockey Trevor McCarthy battled with the runner-up, who was making his first start on dirt after five races on grass, through most of the stretch before prevailing by a head. He completed the mile in 1:37.88.
Out of the Maria’s Mon mare Termite, Signofthecross, who defeated $20,000 maidens in his Los Alamitos debut during the 2020 Summer meet, has now won four of nine and has been second in three of his defeats. He’s banked $100,120.
The 6-5 choice, Signofthecross paid $4.40, $2.60 and $2.20. George Herman Ruth, the 7-2 third choice, returned $3.20 and $2.60 while finishing four lengths in front of pacesetter and 11-1 shot Lovesick Blues. The show price on Lovesick Blues was $3.
I’ll Stand Taller and Table for Ten completed the order of finish. Hapi Hapi and U.S. Danger were scratched.
Heading into the final three days of the Summer Thoroughbred Festival, Abel Cedillo sits atop the jockey standings with five wins while Peter Miller, who teamed with Cedillo to win Friday’s sixth with 11-1 shot Samurai Charm, has four victories to lead the trainers.
There was one winning ticket in the Pick Six Friday. The perfect ticket was worth $143,574.20.
