Community College Chancellor Eloy Oakley to advise federal Education Secretary Miguel Cardona
The Coast Community College District congratulates California Community College Chancellor Eloy Oakley on his temporary assignment as special advisor to federal Education Secretary Miguel Cardona. Oakley has close ties with Orange County’s Coast Colleges as an alumnus of Golden West College – one of the Coast District’s three colleges – and previous roles as a part-time faculty member and the district’s risk services manager.
As of July 26, deputy chancellor Daisy Gonzales will assume the role of acting chancellor for the 116-college system educating 2.1 million students. Gonzales has served in the state chancellor’s office since 2017 and is familiar with the work of Coast and other Orange County districts.
Coast District Chancellor John Weispfenning released the following statement:
The Coast District celebrates the federal advocacy of our alumnus, former colleague, and statewide leader Eloy Oakley. The California Community Colleges are second to none in providing an affordable, accessible, and high-quality education for a diverse student population. Chancellor Oakley will have much to offer the national conversation on how we achieve equitable success for all of California’s communities. As Chancellor Oakley embraces this new opportunity, the Coast District looks forward to working closely with Acting Chancellor Daisy Gonzales to navigate the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. We have great confidence in Acting Chancellor Gonzales’ vision and commitment to students.
