Congressman Lou Correa calls for immigration reform as part of federal budget reconciliation

Congressman Lou Correa (D-CA) joins Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia (D-IL) in calling for immigration reform to be part of the budget reconciliation process, and released the following statement the budget reconciliation negotiations:

“A balanced and fiscally sound budget reconciliation deal must include a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Undocumented immigrants are a vital part of our workforce. They constitute a major portion of our manufacturing workforce, grow our crops, process our food, take care of our children and look after our elderly. During this Covid-19 pandemic, they are essential workers keeping our Nation economically viable and economically strong. And they are taxpayers.

“We must implement “common sense” immigration reform to assure that these hard-working taxpayers are fully integrated into our economy. Our full economic recovery needs a strong workforce and a strong base of taxpayers.

“I will NOT support any budget reconciliation deal that continues to leave hard-working undocumented taxpayers in limbo. Anything less would be fiscally irresponsible. Undocumented immigrants work hard, pay taxes, and are an essential part of our economy.

“This is the moment to pass “common-sense” immigration reform for our Nation. The last time we brought legal status to millions of immigrants and their families, Ronald Reagan was president. It was the right thing to do for our Nation then, and it is the right thing to do for our Nation now. Any and all opportunities must be employed to make immigration reform possible, including the budget reconciliation process for DACA youth, TPS holders, farmworkers, other essential workers, and many other undocumented workers.

“I represent central Orange County, California, home to the largest number of DACA youth in our Nation. They are an essential part of our economy. And many, many undocumented workers, including DACA recipients, are front-line workers that keep us fed and safe.”

Rep. Lou Correa represents California’s 46th Congressional District. He serves as Chair of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight, Management, and Accountability, and is a Member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Agriculture Committee.
