Weekly message from Neighborhood Church: The incredible power of volunteering

1 Peter 4:10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.

I was out greeting kids and their families, kind of like those Walmart Greeters, for our church’s Vacation Bible School (VBS). It was fun to greet kids and parents as they entered the worship center that was transformed into The Sacred Forest (think C.S. Lewis’ Narnia). It has been an amazing week. Kids are having a blast and learning about Jesus who is our forever Rescuer. Our children’s pastor, Lorena, has put together an amazing program that God is using to share Jesus, help kids grow in Jesus, and thrive as followers of Jesus. Yet none of this could happen without the many volunteers. People have volunteered to do games, crafts, be small group leaders, create the set, write the drama, act in the drama, lead in singing, teach the bible lesson, and more! Each effort given is and was powerfully used of God. Not only that, but volunteering helps us grow, encounter God, and infuse fun into our lives.

1 Corinthians 12:7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Galatians 6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Matthew 23:11 The greatest among you shall be your servant.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Yes, God calls us to give of our time, talent, and treasure. And to do it with joy.

2 Corinthians 9:7-8 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

The work of a volunteer is powerful because it is a choice to serve. A selfless act to willingly give time, or talent, or treasure, or all three to help or bless or encourage or participate. Jesus is a great example of service.
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Serving as a volunteer is done with diligence, passion, and as a calling from God!

Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

It does feels good to volunteer! We are part of something bigger than us, part of a good cause that makes a difference. Sure, we are free to use our time wherever we choose. But volunteering allows us to uniquely love our neighbors as Jesus commanded Matthew 22:39-40.

Galatians 5:13-14 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

We can volunteer in our city, in our school, at any number of social service organizations, and yes, with your church. If you don’t already have a church you regularly attend we would like to invite you to view or visit Neighborhood Church. Our website has all the information you need for times and locations of all our Sunday gatherings. We would love for you to join in. You can also find us online at neighborhoodchurch.com. As well, if you would like to view any of our past worship gatherings or videos, visit our YouTube channel, or just search Neighborhood Church Cypress or Neighborhood Church Los Alamitos on their YouTube site.

Seeking to engage the incredible power of volunteering along with you,

Mike
