On Saturday, August 7, 2021, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Laguna Beach Police and Fire Dispatchers received 9-1-1 calls of an injury traffic collision on LagunaCanyon Road just past Laguna College of Art and Design involving a motorcyclist and a vehicle.

Police and Fire personnel arrived within minutes and pronounced the motorcyclist deceased at the
scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that three vehicles and a motorcyclist were traveling outbound approaching the 2300 block of Laguna Canyon Road when the motorcyclist attempted to pass on the left side. At the same time, the driver of one of the three vehicles tried to make an unexpected U-turn, which caused the motorcyclist to collide with the vehicle.

The deceased motorcyclist is identified as 55-year-old Stefano Albano of Corona, California. The driver of the vehicle that attempted to make the U-turn, 68-year-old Becky Merrifield Ettinger of Huntington Beach, California, was arrested for DUI.

Due to the accident, all lanes of Laguna Canyon Road were closed from Broadway at Forest to El Toro Road from 10:25 p.m. to 5:45 a.m., and traffic was rerouted. This traffic collision is still under investigation.

  1. I think the investigation needs to be completed before judgment is passed. She was arrested yes, but the facts have not completely come to light. I feel for the family who lost their dad don’t get me wrong but lets focus on healing and giving the families what they need.

  2. I agree that loss of life is tragic and the woman (Ettinger) should be held accountable, however, that area is a “yellow line”, i.e. no passing and motorcycles routinely pass vehicles on the left side (often within inches) and/or cross into the center turn lane for the purpose of passing vehicles (illegal). The rider has some responsibility in this incident. If he has obeyed the traffic laws, he would be alive today.

  3. Many articles on other pages say “arrested on suspicion of DUI” I wonder if this has this been confirmed a DUI or not?

  4. This is very sad. So many lives ruined because of Alcohol.

    1. Eh DUI can be anything, even Tylenol or you can be completely sober and still be charged
