After interviewing Carrie Katsumata Hayashida, the last of eight applicants, and at the request of Councilmember Anne Hertz, the Cypress City Council tabled the debate on which of the eight applicants to select to replace Stacy Berry, who resigned for personal reasons.
Councilmember Hertz requested the delay in order to allow time for review of material gathered.
According to Cypress City Manager Pete Grant, only two rules for the process of selecting a replacement govern the Council’s actions. First, the choice must be made by September 2, or a special election will be triggered. Second, to be approved, an applicant must receive at least two affirmative votes.
After a selection is made, the City Manager recommended that the person selected be sworn in as soon as possible by the City Clerk to enable an immediate plunge into City business. Then a celebratory ceremonial swearing-in can take place at the first regular September meeting.
