Teens hold voter pre-registration drive on 101st Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

Six young high school women from ABC Unified School District in Cerritos hosted a Teen Voter Pre-Registration Drive on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at the Cerritos Public Library in Cerritos, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The date of August 26 commemorates the 101st Anniversary of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote on August 26, 1920. It is now also celebrated as Women’s Equality Day.

The six young high school women who came to the Cerritos Library for the Teen Voter Pre-Registration Drive were: Alejandra Espinosa from Artesia High School; Alessa Gomez, Jamie Gokim, Krishna Hajari, from Cerritos High School; Leah Triana, from Gahr High School; and Amber Wang from Whitney High School. The young women proudly wore sashes emblazoned with the words, “Women Win the Vote,” in the official colors of the Women’s Suffrage Movement, of purple, white, and yellow. They assisted twenty-six eager 16 and 17- year-olds to fill out their voter application forms so that they will be officially registered to vote when they are 18 years old. They also encouraged library patrons to check out books on Women’s Suffrage and gave library patrons bookmarks about famous American women.

Since the six young women are members of the Legacy of the Women’s Suffrage Movement Project that is jointly sponsored by the La Palma-Cerritos Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and ABCUSD’s Career Tech Education Office (ABCUSD/CTE), the young women also provided AAUW membership forms and brochures to interested persons. The Legacy Project is coordinated by La Palma-Cerritos AAUW members Norma Williamson and Gail Ross.

The purpose of the Legacy of the Women’s Suffrage Movement Project, that was funded by an AAUW California grant, is to develop civic leadership skills and give high school women in the 11 th and 12 th grades, the opportunity to explore careers in public office. Using virtual zoom meetings, the young high school women will interview women who have served in public office, and learn about election issues and campaigns.

Two of the Legacy Project participants have already had some experience with publicizing this Teen Voter Pre-Registration Drive before August 26. Amber Wang wrote an article that was published in The O.C. Breeze online, and Leah Triana wrote the announcement that appeared in Cerritos TV3 prior to this event.

The Legacy Project participants were welcomed by ABCUSD/CTE liaison Evangelina Romero and Cerritos Head Librarian Annie Hylton. La Palma-Cerritos AAUW members who came to show their support of the Legacy Project included : Tobi Balma, Sondra Cohen, Saurabh Deedwania, Edna Ethington, Marilyn Forsstrom, Joan Plyman, Sue Solomon, and Project Coordinator Norma Williamson.

The public is welcome to come to the next Legacy Project Teen Voter Pre-Registration Drive on Friday, October 8, 2021, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in front of the Cerritos Library entrance.
