UCLA beats LSU, 38-27 (last week)

So somehow I forgot to report on last week’s win by the UCLA Bruins against LSU’s Tigers, who had to practice away from Baton Rouge because of the threat of Hurricane Ida.

With USC’s loss to Stanford this week, UCLA nudges ahead of its crosstown rival in overall wins but it hasn’t yet faced a conference opponent.

Last week’s game saw neither team score in the first quarter. LSU pounced first in the second quarter to bound ahead by seven points that were answered by two touchdowns by UCLA before LSU could itself respond with a field goal, all in the second quarter and leaving UCLA in the lead by four points at the half.

UCLA came out from the locker room strong, scoring a touchdown before LSU could respond with its own touchdown. Each team added a field goal before the quarter close. UCLA still led by four points.

The Bruins widened the lead in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns. LSU came back with its own touchdown but couldn’t close the remaining gap.

UCLA QB Dorian Johson completed 9 for 260 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. LSU QB Max Johnson completed 26-of-46 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and two sacks.

UCLA will next play on Saturday, September 18 against Fresno State at the Rose Bowl.
