Diabetes mellitus is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in low-income populations. As one of the most unfortunate complications of the condition, diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working-age Americans. However, 95% of these vision loss cases can be prevented with early detection through retinal exams (National Eye Institute). With this in mind, Lestonnac staff, volunteers, and donors are working tirelessly to prevent such severe outcomes with diabetic screening initiatives. There are 800 people SoCal uninsured, low-income residents currently hoping to be seen and treated by an ophthalmologist.

Experts in the field see the importance of early detection and treatment as well. Every month on a Saturday, 25 patients will be scheduled to be evaluated and receive any needed on-the-spot injection or laser treatment from a team of volunteer Ophthalmologists who will provide treatment at no cost. Many, if not all, of these patients, would otherwise go untreated without the support of generous volunteers and donors. This unique comprehensive care is valued at upwards of $50,000 for a half-day. With continued public interest and support, we are hoping to see up to 50 patients in the near future.
