Rep. Steel introduces legislation to honor Vietnamese hero with post office renaming

Rep. Michelle Steel (CA-48) announced the introduction of her bill to rename the post office at 9317 Bolsa Rd in Little Saigon the “General Tran Hung Dao Post Office.” General Dao is considered to be one of the greatest military generals of all time and is a significant historical figure in the Vietnamese community.

“I’m proud to represent Little Saigon, which is home to the largest Vietnamese community outside of Vietnam. Renaming this post office to honor General Dao would mean so much to the Vietnamese Americans that I am so proud to represent,” said Rep. Steel.

Rep. Steel spoke on the House Floor in support of this legislation. You can watch here or read her remarks as prepared below:

M. Speaker, I rise today to talk about an important figure in the Vietnamese Community, General Tran Hung Dao.

General Dao was one of the greatest Vietnamese military commanders of all time.

He saved Vietnam from Mongolian invasion three times, which is considered one of the greatest military feats in history.

General Dao remains a significant figure in the Vietnamese community today.

I’m proud to represent Little Saigon, which is home to over 189,000 Vietnamese Americans – the largest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam.

This week, in honor of the anniversary of his death on October 3rd, I introduced a bill that would rename a U.S. Post Office in Little Saigon as the “General Tran Hung Dao Post Office”.

This renaming would mean so much to those in the Vietnamese community that I am so proud to represent.

  1. Thank you for bringing this issue up naming American Post Office . I am proud of Vietnamese Society and what we have contribute. I just don’t see Tran Hung Dao made any sense here. I just see as a place that we take over the American society. It just ask for someone else to attack. I doubt Tran Hung Dao will protect us.
