Dr. Byron D. Clift Breland has been appointed the new chancellor of the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD). He will assume his new position on January 18, 2022.
Dr. Breland’s appointment was announced this afternoon by the NOCCCD Board of Trustees. The Board will formally approve Dr. Breland’s appointment at its regular meeting on November 23, 2021. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Dr. Breland to NOCCCD as its ninth chancellor,” stated Dr. Barbara Dunsheath, NOCCCD Board of Trustees President. “Dr. Breland is an experienced leader who is committed to student success, academic excellence, social justice, racial equity, and participatory governance. The Board is confident that with his leadership, the District will emerge stronger than before, and continue to grow and thrive in our community.”
As chancellor, Dr. Breland will serve as the chief executive officer for a district that includes Cypress College, Fullerton College, and North Orange Continuing Education. “I truly appreciate the confidence in me to serve as the next chancellor of NOCCCD,” said Dr. Breland. “I am impressed with the District’s continued focus on providing excellence in teaching and learning, and its dedication to innovation in instruction and support services, including the mental health and well-being of students. NOCCCD’s deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice are inspiring—these sound principles help to serve and meet the unique and diverse needs of the community.”
Dr. Breland has more than 25 years of administrative and teaching experience in higher education and currently serves as chancellor of the San Jose – Evergreen Community College District (SJECCD) located in Silicon Valley. He has worked to develop innovative partnerships that provide meaningful educational and job training experiences for the diverse student populations of San Jose City College, Evergreen Valley College, the Community College Extension Center in Milpitas, and the Center for Economic Mobility.
Dr. Breland currently serves on numerous boards, councils and commissions, including: the National Advisory Board for the Steve Fund; Mayor’s Silicon Valley Recovery Roundtable; Affordability, Food and Housing Taskforce; Community College Council on Mental Health; Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on International Education; Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce; African-American Male Education Network and Development; and Silicon Valley Leadership Group. He also currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Directors for the Community College League of California (CCLC), and as the President of the Chief Executive Officers of the California Community Colleges Board of CCLC.
