In November, the Los Alamitos City Council voted to move its regular December meeting from the third Monday of December to the second.
Accordingly, the Council met on Monday, December 13. Its major item of business was to reorganize itself for the new year, after congratulating the outgoing mayor, Mark Chirco.
The reorganization went swiftly. According to established procedure, the outgoing mayor relinquished control of the meeting to City Clerk Windmera Quintanar, who asked for nominations for the position of mayor. A single nomination was submitted: Shelley Hasselbrink. The City Clerk performed a roll-call vote, resulting in unanimous support.
The new mayor then took control of the meeting in order to oversee election of a new mayor pro tem. A single nomination was submitted: Tanya Doby. The City Clerk performed a second roll-call vote, resulting again in unanimous support.
Result: both the mayor and mayor pro tem of Los Alamitos are now women.
The only remaining business was agreeing to committee assignments, which was also quickly finished.
Newly-elected Mayor Shelley Hasselbrink adjourned the meeting in memory of Gene Pietrini, one of the owners of Pietrini Pizza Napolitana, who passed away in December 2021.
