Rescue California is calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to immediately rescind his latest arbitrary and punitive mask mandate, which will further devastate many small businesses struggling to stay open and interfere with Californians from making responsible personal choices.
On Dec. 13, 2021, Newsom announced a renewed mask mandate for all indoor settings. The mandate also issued new travel advisories and implemented stricter requirements for indoor events with over 1,000 attendees and outdoor events with over 10,000 attendees. The order takes effect starting today, Dec. 15, 2021, and lasts through Jan. 15, 2022.
One day before the statewide mask mandate was to take place, he exempted four of his favorite counties – San Francisco, Contra Costa, San Mateo, and Marin, where many of Newsom’s wealthy donors and personal businesses are located. San Francisco County is number one in population density, Contra Costa is number seven, San Mateo is number eight, and Marin is number 16. We’re sure rural counties with some of the lowest population densities are befuddled.
On Mar. 4, 2020, Newsom grabbed emergency executive power, declaring a state of emergency. Since then, he has issued over 58 executive orders. Rescue California demands the Governor lift his executive emergency power and return the power to the People. California’s 58 diverse counties are in the best position to know what is best to keep their citizens safe and businesses thriving.
Anne Dunsmore: “Once again, Gavin Newsom is abusing executive power to punish and reward for his own personal gain without any legislative concurrence. This is unacceptable and he must be held accountable. He needs to explain these exemptions and be held accountable for his decisions. He was inconsistent with the shutdown last year and he is doing the same thing this year on mask mandates. He needs to have uniform reasons across the state without bias, especially when small businesses are struggling to stay open.”
