CIF Southern Section announces postponement of Cheer Championships

Due to the ongoing situation related to the COVID-19 surge and the effects it is having on our member schools, we have made the decision to postpone the 2022 CIF Southern Section Traditional Competitive Cheer Championships scheduled for this Saturday, January 8, 2022 at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside.

CIF Southern Section Commissioner of Athletics Rob Wigod stated, “We originally had 101 teams registered for this event prior to Winter Break, and as of yesterday afternoon, we have had approximately 30% of them withdraw due to COVID-19 issues within their programs. In addition, we expect that there will be others that will have to withdraw in the next few days further affecting our ability to conduct this championship event on Saturday at the highest level that it deserves. Our Traditional Competitive Cheer student-athletes were not able to compete in our championships in 2021 and we want to try and provide every possible opportunity we can to allow for this competition to take place this year. Therefore, in consultation with our Cheer Coaches Advisory Committee, we have selected Saturday, February 5, 2022 as the new date for our 2022 Traditional Competitive Cheer Championships. The location will remain at MarƟ n Luther King High School in Riverside.”

As it has been from the onset of the pandemic, individual schools/school districts/private schools will determine whether their teams are able to compete in athletics, following the guidelines for youth sports mandated by the California Department of Public Health and local county health departments.
