Meet the Cypress Art League

“If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.” – Edward Hopper

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” – Edgar Degas

Not everyone can be a Hopper or a Degas, but we can all try to be the best artist we can be. Luckily, we have a community here in Cypress where we can learn and share our artistic passions.

The Cypress Art League is a non-profit organization located in Cypress, California. It was incorporated in 1969 to promote understanding and enjoyment of the arts among the citizens of the communities represented. Members include artists of all mediums, photographers, and patrons of the arts.

The Art League’s purpose is to promote understanding and enjoyment of the arts among the citizens of the communities represented; encourage advanced study in the field of the Arts, provide art exhibits and programs of interest to the membership and community; and grant scholarships to students pursuing a future in a field or fields of the arts.

Our “home” is the Cypress Community Center. Meetings are held at regular intervals as announced on the website. Nationally acclaimed artists lecture and demonstrate their art during these meetings. visitors are always welcome and are encouraged to join in the many events sponsored throughout the year.

The Cypress Art League holds its general meetings five times a year, in January, March, May, September and November with refreshments served with a donation of $2.00. No meetings are held during the summer months; however, other activities may be planned such as workshops, tours, etc.

At these meetings, we have demonstrations and/or lectures by professional artists.

Members are encouraged to bring one piece of their creations to these meetings for judging by popular vote and ribbon awards (except the September meeting). Best of Show is awarded by the guest artist (demonstrator). The winner will be asked to display three of their works at the next General Meeting.

The Art League has a primary focus of furthering and encouraging future artists to pursue their dreams. Scholarships are given by the Club at the college and high school levels. Recipients of these scholarships are invited to the General meetings to receive their checks and share their works and/or techniques.

Open juried art shows are held twice a year during community art events. Prize money is awarded in numerous categories and artists are acknowledged at a public awards presentation. The Art League currently supports and assists the city in Scheduling and exhibiting art in the Cypress Community Center Art Gallery. These shows feature local artists’ work, and are available to the public, free of charge.

We are highly motivated to provide stimuli in enhancing your artistic experience and have in previous years conducted outings for all who wanted to participate. Our excursions are currently paused, but we hope to start them up again soon. Samples of our past tours are the Getty Museum, San Diego’s Balboa Park for a Norman Rockwell exhibition, Gene Autry Museum, Asian American Museum, Huntington Library, Descanso Gardens, even a week-end cruise. We promote Plein-Air events and workshops. There is no membership requirement for joining these tours or workshops.

The Cypress Art League maintains a website to current information on our activities to the community. The website also is an additional venue for members to exhibit their art on-line. Please ask about this feature. Check us out at cypressartleague.com

Members will receive a Newsletter, usually published three weeks before the next scheduled General meeting. It includes demonstrator information, tour announcements and any other pertinent information of interest to the membership. Suggestions for improving this publication are appreciated.

The Art League Gallery exhibits works of winners from the juried shows, workshops and other shows periodically held. There is a mini display case for small pieces in the gallery showcase. There is a 15% fee charged on items sold through the Gallery.
