Proverbs 1:5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.
As a kid it was instilled in me the joy, the fun, and the adventure of learning. My dad was a university professor. He taught thermodynamics and mechanical engineering. He was a very smart man and everything we did was a learning lesson. At one point, we lived on the university campus in factuality housing, and I would wander into empty classrooms where they displayed experiments, examples of different kinds of rocks, birds, bugs, and models of atoms. It all was fascinating! Our dad would take us on discovery adventures to national parks, explorations of famous caves and caverns, walk throughs of old buildings with unique architecture, and science fairs with amazing displays of the mysteries of God’s grand creation. We would see how hot air raises a balloon that can carry people. We would experience flying in a glider that, though it has no engine, soars on the vectors and drafts of the wind. We would stay up late to view the Northern Lights (yes we lived in Alaska because my dad taught at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks), and to watch the nocturnal actions of flying squirrels! Alaska is a learner’s paradise. That reminds me of the time I got chased by a moose on the way to swim practice. But that’s another story for another time! The key is learning is both fun and beneficial. Learning specialists will tell us that learning can bring about adaptability, greater success, resourcefulness, competence, better relationships, greater heath, a deeper interaction with God, a stronger faith, and yes, even happiness. Yes, learning is fun so let’s learn something new this year.
Learning for me was and still is a fun adventure. Yet, I did struggle greatly in school. I have a learning disability, dyslexia. It was not known back when I was in grade school, so I struggled. But I still loved to learn and learned how to work around my disability to where I have received a doctorate, and I continue to learn. Learning and discovery is like opening a new present or being given an incredible bonus. God desires for us to be a forever learner.
Proverbs 18:15 An intelligent heart acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
Proverbs 24:5 A wise man is full of strength, and a man of knowledge enhances his might.
Proverbs 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.
Wisdom is applied knowledge and true knowledge and wisdom come from a proper view and understanding of God
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
How could learning something new be part of this new year? Maybe learn a new skill, read some new books, gain a new hobby, or take on a new technology. Maybe you could apply that knowledge and grow in the wisdom of practice. Maybe grow deeper in faith?!? Let’s learn something new.
