Updated WalletHub study: Changes in unemployment rate by state

With inflation remaining high and the U.S. gaining 223,000 jobs in December, fewer than in the previous month, WalletHub released updated rankings for its report on Changes in Unemployment Rate by State, along with a WalletHub Q&A.

In order to take stock of how unemployment rates are changing throughout the U.S., WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on six key metrics that compare unemployment rate statistics from the latest month for which data is available (December 2022) to key dates in 2022, 2021, 2020 and 2019.

Unemployment Change in California:

  • -0.85% Change in Unemployment (December 2022 vs November 2022)
    • 782,288 unemployed people in December 2022 vs 789,025 in November 2022;
    • 18th best change in the U.S.
  • -28.56% Change in Unemployment (December 2022 vs December 2021)
    • 782,288 unemployed people in December 2022 vs 1,095,056 in December 2021;
    • 4th best change in the U.S.
  • -54.33% Change in Unemployment (December 2022 vs December 2020)
    • 782,288 unemployed people in December 2022 vs 1,712,971 in December 2020;
    • 4th best change in the U.S.
  • -1.85% Change in Unemployment (December 2022 vs December 2019)
    • 782,288 unemployed people in December 2022 vs 797,054 in December 2019;
    • 24th best change in the U.S.
  • 22.34% Change in Not Seasonally Adjusted Continued Claims (December 2022 vs November 2022)
    • 325,302 continued claims in December 2022 vs 265,891 in November 2022;

  • 4.1% Unemployment Rate (December 2022)
    • 13th highest unemployment rate in the U.S.
