SEIU endorses Dave Min for Congress

Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which represents nearly 2 million members across the United States and Canada, endorsed State Senator Dave Min for California’s 47th Congressional District. This endorsement also includes the support of SEIU California and its 700,000 healthcare workers, janitors, social workers, security officers, in-home caregivers, school and university employees, court workers, and city, county and state employees. SEIU California is the largest employee union in the state.

This early endorsement from one of the most important labor organizations in the country is just the latest in a long string of impressive and decisive endorsements for Senator Min, who launched his campaign for CA-47 in January with the support of the incumbent Congresswoman Katie Porter. In recent weeks, Min has announced the endorsements of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 47, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, California Insurance Commissioner Ricard Lara, California Superintendent of Public Schools Tony Thurmond, California Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins, California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus’s political leadership ASPIRE PAC, more than 50 local Orange County government officials, and more than 60 state legislators. A full endorsement list is available here.

“Dave Min has been a fighter for working families across Orange County and we are proud to endorse him,” said David Huerta, President of California SEIU State Council. “From standing up to Wall Street banks on behalf of Orange County homeowners during the mortgage crisis, to advocating for a living wage and affordable healthcare for working women and men, to passing consequential gun-safety legislation to protect our children, Dave is a true public servant who has always put the well-being of Californians first. The 47th District is critical for Democrats to retake the House of Representatives and Dave Min is the only candidate with the track record of accomplishment and electoral victory to win this seat.”

Senator Min, the only Korean-American in the state legislature, serves as Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee and as Senate Vice Chair of the Asian and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. Min has proven himself an incredibly effective legislative leader in the Senate, authoring 16 bills signed into law by the Governor, including leading legislation on hate crimes, gun violence prevention, family safety, and women’s reproductive rights. In the wake of the 2021 Huntington Beach Oil Spill, he stood up to the oil industry and led efforts to end offshore drilling. Min serves as Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee and as Senate Vice Chair of the Asian and Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus. He previously chaired the Senate Cybersecurity Select Committee.

Before entering the State Senate, Min was a law professor at UC Irvine, where he taught and researched in the area of business law. He resides with his wife Jane Stoever, a UC Irvine law professor who specializes in domestic violence and family law, and their three children in Irvine. Dave is a native Californian, a product of California public schools who graduated from the Wharton School and Harvard Law School, and an Eagle Scout.
