Japanese Imperial Navy submarine I-17 arrives off the coast of Salem, Oregon. It would spend three weeks with eight other Imperial Navy submarines harassing West Coast shipping before shelling Santa Barbara then returning across the Pacific to resupply. Sportscaster Dick Enberg is found dead in his home in La Jolla. His bags were packed for a planned trip to visit family in Boston. He had retired in 2016 after calling games for the San Diego Padres for seven years. He called UCLA basketball games for nine years, including Houston’s victory over UCLA in 1968 that snapped the Bruins’ 47-game winning streak.
