- 1931 The first group of Mexicans were “repatriated” by Los Angeles County via the Southern Pacific Railraod at $14.70 per person. The justifications for the deportations were to open jobs for American citizens and to save the cost of relief efforts for the unemployed. A large percentage were actually American citizens, and most of those repatriated eventually returned. [Source: California: An Island on the Land by Carey McWilliams.]
