The Zoot Suit riots began. Gangs of armed white U.S. servicemen roamed the streets of Los Angeles seeking out zoot-suited minorities to beat up. The pretext was wartime rationing of fabrics — the zoot suits made by bootleg tailors used lots of fabric. The soldiers and sailors also viewed the zoot-suitors as draft dodgers, although most were too young to serve. [Sources: California: An Island on the Land by Carey McWilliams, and History.com.]
