- 1864 Samuel Clemens arrives in San Francisco. He had served as an irregular in the Confederate Army, but deserted to join his brother Orion in Nevada. His experience in mining camps was the basis for his wildly popular story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” that launched his international career under the pen name of Mark Twain, a quintessential American humorist.
