1901
The first Colorado River aqueduct brings water to Imperial Valley. It was so successful that a second aqueduct was quickly built, finished by Oct. 1904. Heavy rain over the Winter and Apring 1904-1905 caused the Colorado River to change its course and breach the second canal, flooding the Imperial Valley. It took two years for the Southern Pacific Railroad to complete a rock, gravel, and clay levee to plug the breach. [Source: California by Kevin Starr.]
