California voters narrowly approve a bond measure to fund what became known as the California State Water Project. California Gov. Pat Brown campaigned for the project. Joseph Jensen, Chairman of the Board of the Metropolitan Water District, opposed the project because he felt that it was unfair to the MWD. He voted against both the Project and the bond. The bond measure passed with a margin of 173,944 votes out of 5.8 million votes cast. [Source: the Sacramento Bee.]
