The satellite Discoverer XVII is launched into orbit from California’s Vandenberg AFB. It was part of CORONA, a “top-priority reconnaissance satellite project operated by the CIA Directorate of Science & Technology with assistance from the US Air Force.” The first launch on January 21, 1959 failed.
