The body of California poet George Sterling is found in his room at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. He had committed suicide by drinking a vial of cyanide that he habitually carried with him. One of his most famous lines was a description of San Francisco as “the cool, grey city of love!” He was born on Dec. 1, 1869 in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York. He followed an uncle to the West Coast in 1890. [Sources: California: An Island on the Land by Carey McWilliams and Wikipedia.]
