California National Guard troops under the command of Colonel Wallace A. Mason suppress a revolt by 1,200 Folsom State Prison inmates. The facility, about 30 miles from the state capital of Sacramento, is now comprised of three smaller facilities: Facility A for medium custody male inmates; Facility B for medium custody female inmates; and a minimum support facility. It is California’s second-oldest prison. Authorized in 1858 by the State Legislature, it accepted its first 48 inmates (transfers from San Quentin) on July 26, 1880.
