In Southern California, the Canyon 2 Fire starts at 9:45 a.m. in near Gypsum Road. Wind-whipped flames in tinder-dry brush with single-digit humidity allow the fire to grow quickly. As of Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, the OCFA estimated that 6,000 acres had burned, 24 structures destroyed with multiple damaged, and 1,000 firefighters on the ground.
An official incident update at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 gives the incident location as State Rout 91 in the area of Coal Canyon. About 8,000 acres had burned, with containment at 40% and full containment expected by Saturday, Oct. 14. Officials reported 3,500 structures were threatened by the fire, 14 structures were destroyed, and 22 structures were damaged.
Total personnel fighting the fire exceeded 1600, including 242 engines, 2 water tenders, 13 helicopters, 5 air tankers, 33 hand crews, and 5 bulldozers.
