The Miss America pageant made its network TV debut on ABC. Miss California, Lee Meriwether, was crowned the winner. Born May 27, 1935, in Los Angeles, Ms. Meriwether enjoyed a moderately successful acting career that included science fiction series (The Time Tunnel and Star Trek) and murder mystery (Barbaby Jones). 1988
The wreck of the USS Central America is found off the coast of the Carolinas by searchers from the Columbus-America Discovery Group of Ohio. The ship, a three-masted, 272-feet long sidewheel steamship, was carrying tons of California gold when it sank in a hurricane, killing a total of 426 passengers and crew. The entire airspace of the United States — including local airports LAX, LGB, and SNA — is closed in response to terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. A fourth attack failed when passengers revolted and the airplane (UA 93) crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
