Ferdinand Magellan sails from Spain with five vessels and 265 men on a round-the-world voyage of discovery that would eventually lead to exploration of the coast of California. The voyage’s completion on September 6, 1522, would link Span, the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, South and Central America, Mexico, the Pacific Ocean, and the Philippines into rule by Spain for three hundred years, until the empire collapsed in the early 1800s.
